Brokeback Not Amused By Crash January 31, 2006

When it was released in May, industry pundits said the film — featuring a large cast and a roundelay plot concerning racism and prejudice — couldn’t compete against the summer blockbusters then coming out.
“Crash” defied those predictions, grossing $54 million — more than “The Island” or “XXX: State of the Union,” two heavily promoted summer films — and on a budget of less than $10 million, peanuts by Hollywood standards.
Then the film, despite terrific reviews, solid DVD sales and a boost from Oprah Winfrey, was supposed to be forgotten when the Oscar handicapping season began at the end of 2005. But “Crash” was revived by making a number of critics’ top 10 lists and being nominated for a slew of awards. (more…)

Joining the chorus of a million big skeptics, Oprah Winfrey has withdrawn her support for embattled memoirist James Frey.
Winfrey confronted the A Million Little Pieces author during a live taping of her show on Thursday, stating that she was “really embarrassed” by her initial decision to stand up for him in the face of allegations that he fabricated large chunks of his book.
“It is difficult for me to talk to you because I feel duped. I really feel duped,” Winfrey said to Frey. (more…)

Britney saved by a lovely paparazzi January 24, 2006

It’s a good job that nobody listens to Kevin Federline. He hates the paparazzi following him and Britney around, even if he does bewilderingly call them Pavarottis. But the paparazzi are a useful bunch.
Just ask Britney Spears. When her Ferrari had a breakdown recently on a California highway, who was there to help her push the car to safety? Kevin? No. Baby Preston? No. The paparazzi? Why, yes.
The paparazzi are usually blamed for causing accidents – like making Lindsay Lohan drive into a truck or smashing cameras into the faces of children. But it’s rare to hear about the other side of the paparazzi – the warm, cuddly, caring side. (more…)

Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” scored its most important award yet Sunday, being named 2005’s best picture by the Producers Guild of America. Not only is it the first of several key industry awards to be announced, but it is a significant indicator, in that many members of the Producers Guild are also members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In the 17 years that the producers have been presenting awards, its best picture winner has gone on to pick up the Oscar 12 times.
On Saturday, the Directors Guild will announce its winner and, on a nationally televised show Sunday (8 p.m., TNT, TBS), the Screen Actors Guild will have its say.
The Oscars show will be held March 7 in Los Angeles.

President Bartlet and Jack McFarland don’t seem as if they exist in the same universe, but they share the same reality: They’re canceled.
NBC has dropped the other shoe on The West Wing and Will & Grace, formally announcing Sunday that both long-running shows would run no more after this season.
West Wing, the 25-time Emmy-winning Oval Office drama, will depart May 14 after seven seasons. Will & Grace, the 14-time Emmy-winning gay old time comedy, will sign off on May 18 after eight seasons. Each finale will be preceded by an hourlong retrospective; Will & Grace’s last episode will run a super-sized 60 minutes.
The cancellations were not unexpected, or as NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said of the West Wing move: “I don’t think it was a news flash to anybody. (more…)

Once again, Oscars will span the Globes for nominees January 20, 2006

If you missed Monday’s Golden Globes show, get ready for a rerun. The 78th annual Oscars show will look very similar, minus the empty champagne bottles littering tables and, hopefully, Drew Barrymore’s dress.
It’s all a matter of timing, something the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences appeared to have solved last year. For years, Oscar voters were accused of cribbing from Globes results when picking their nominees. In 2005, the timetable was changed so Academy Award nomination ballots were due before the Globes party, so imitation wasn’t possible.
The academy’s desire to distance itself from Globes voters carried over to awards night. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association leaned heavily toward The Aviator and Sideways in its voting. Oscar voters admired both films but saved its shiniest statuettes for Million Dollar Baby. The academy’s reputation for independent judging was briefly restored, along with the impression that the Oscars are the only movie awards that matter. (more…)
Q’orianka Kilcher, teen actress’ performance puts her on top of ‘World’ January 20, 2006

She strolls very slowly into the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., apologizing for her tardiness, while chewing gum and smiling and shaking hands. And here comes her mom, bringing up the rear, with a video camera. Mom is intent on capturing everything (for a documentary), all this newness, the movie premieres, the newspaper interviews, the museum visitors doing “who’s that?” double takes. So, after a little negotiating — in German — Q’orianka (Cor-ee-AHN-ka, which means “Golden Eagle” in the ancient South American Andean language Quechua) Kilcher, the 15-year-old star of Terrence Malick’s “The New World,” does her mother’s bidding, and stands there, in the lobby where everybody can see her, holding up a copy of her very first magazine cover. Q’orianka Kilcher on The New World: Interview January 19, 2006

While most girls her age were preparing for their sophomore year of high school, Q’orianka Kilcher was preparing to make her big screen debut as Pocahontas in Terrence Malick’s The New World starring opposite Colin Farrell and Christian Bale.
Sitting in her hotel room in a red dress – almost an evening gown – that she made herself (she and her mother make all of her clothes), Q’orianka Kilcher is bubbly like a lot of teenage girls her age, but can on a dime turn on a precocious intelligence and bearing that is very much on display in her role as Pocahontas in the Terrence Malick film. An online casino has a piece of Captain Kirk.
Actor William Shatner has sold his kidney stone for $A33,275, with the money going to a housing charity, it was announced today.
Shatner reached an agreement yesterday to sell the stone to an online casino.
“This takes organ donors to a new height, to a new low, maybe. How much is a piece of me worth?” he said in a telephone interview.
The online charity is noted for its collection of oddities, which includes a partially eaten cheese sandwich said to contain the image of the Virgin Mary.
“This is a bold new addition to our fleet,” the website’s chief executive Richard Rowe said in a statement.
The money will go to Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for the needy.
“This would be the first Habitat for Humanity house built out of stone,” joked Darren Julien, president of Los Angeles-based Julien’s Auctions, which handled the sale.
Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk on the original “Star Trek” TV series and won the Emmy for his role as a ethically challenged lawyer Denny Crane on “Boston Legal”, passed the stone last northern autumn. (more…)

PASADENA, California (Hollywood Reporter) – If PBS’ pitch is persuasive, the upcoming season of “Masterpiece Theater” might carry the imprimatur “Oprah Winfrey Presents.”
The idea for a Winfrey sponsorship of the venerable PBS series was broached two years ago and will be presented again to Harpo, Winfrey’s production company, outgoing PBS president and CEO Pat Mitchell told reporters Saturday during the network’s portion of the winter Television Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena.
“Oprah is incredibly philanthropic with her money and supports so many good causes,” Mitchell said. “This would be one.” (more…)

Carter brought the case through his production company, Ten Thirteen, and is seeking unspecified damages.

Jack Bauer’s latest marathon workday got off to a good start Sunday, ratings-wise.The Fox drama “24″ notched its most-watched episode ever with its fifth-season premiere as the first of two back-to-back episodes got a boost from a primetime overrun (in East Coast and Midwestern markets) of the NFL’s NFC divisional playoff game between the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears.
Airing from about 8:13-9:11 p.m. EST, the first episode of “24″ averaged 17 million viewers and a 7.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic (demographic share data for Sunday were not available Monday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday), according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. The second hour of “24,” which ended at about 10:13 p.m. EST, held onto the majority of its lead-in to finish out with 15.5 million viewers and a 6.7 rating in adults 18-49. (more…)
